The Inner Courtyard
Established in 1753 around the collections of Sir Hans Sloane, a prominent scientist and physician, the museum opened its doors on January 15th 1759. The current neo-classical building, designed by Sir Robert Smirke, was constructed in the first half of te C.19th on the site of its original home, Montague House. Today, the museum holds one of the world’s great collections – around 8m items from across all aspects of human history, art and culture.
Grade I
To re run a Portland Stone plinth standing in an inner courtyard.
The defective Portland Stone was removed back to its original core and re-run on-site using an approved Portland Stone medium, float finished to match the original detail.
Bronze and other metal statues leach into their stone plinths – the tell-tale green staining. In addition, the supporting stonework must contend with ever-rising levels of pollution. Cleaning and restoring these bases and/or plinths is therefore an important specialist skill requiring detailed understanding as materials and method must be perfectly matched.
