Gieves & Hawkes
Founded in 1771, Gieves & Hawkes is one of the oldest continual bespoke tailoring companies in the world. However, it only moved to its current – and famous - Georgian address (1 Saville Row) in 1912. Its stucco facade makes it the most recognisable of the buildings in the street that defines English tailoring. It was essential that our restoration work stayed true to its period architecture and aesthetics.

To repair the stucco mouldings and render
First, templates were taken of the mouldings and used to reform the original detailing with our own mix of lime mortar.
The defective areas of Stucco detailing and render, across the elevations, were then carefully removed.
The vermiculated panels on either side of the main entrance were fully restored. Our repair mortar was applied and, once set, carved by hand to match the original detail.
Rendering was completed using lime mortar with ashlar jointing scribed to bed and perpend joints.

Retail outlets are not all plain glass and neon lights. Retailers, as here, do move into architecturally interesting and important buildings while many shops were – and are - built with genuine architectural ambition.
