In recognition of what Churchill and Britain had done for Yugoslavia during WWII, Marshal Tito sent an imposing slab of native white limestone to serve as the base for Oscar Nemon’s bronze statue of Sir Winston to stand on The Green at Westerham, the Market Town a mile or two away from his beloved Chartwell. But neither party foresaw the damaging effects of atmospheric pollution and verdigris staining from the statue would have on the plinth. But nearly 50 years on, it was in a sorry state. As our Head Office overlooks The Green, we were only too aware of what needed to be done.
A colleague introduced us to Westerham Town Council and, following discussion and a final presentation, we started....

To clean the limestone plinth of Churchill’s statue and repoint the surrounding paving.
The plinth was cleaned using a combination of a state-of-the-art hot water cleaning system (DOFF) and conservation poultices to rejuvenate this well-loved monument.

We were subsequently asked back to give similar attention to the plinth of the statue of General Wolfe that stands a few metres away from that of Sir Winston. We have also been asked to clean Westerham’s War Memorial, situated just beyond the lychgate of St. Mary’s Church, looking proudly down onto The Green.
