Grand Hotel Brighton Following Restoration
Until the early morning of 12 October 1984, The Grand Brighton Hotel was one of the many Victorian (and Edwardian) 'Grand' hotels dotted across England, both on the coast and inland. The IRA bomb changed all that. Never forgetting the five people who lost their lives (and the many others who were injured), it was an honour to be chosen to work on its restoration...

The full restoration of the bomb damaged facade.
First, all the defective areas of the existing stucco facade were cut back to a sound core, not less than 30mm deep. Any repairs over 30mm deep had stainless steel reinforcements inserted.
Next, a stucco mix, replicating the original, was created and a base coat, two further undercoats and a finish coat applied.
The stucco mouldings were restored by hand using the mix, matching the original in line and full, intricate detail. This included the main high level circular pediment along with its capital and base mouldings that had taken the brunt of the blast.

While our client was the Hotel, everyone involved was mindful of Mrs. Thatcher's 'instruction' that the restoration should be done without compromise and to the highest possible standards of craftsmanship. A challenge we gladly accepted - and met.
